Field Report from Laos: Harsher Than We Imagined|

This is Echo Social Impact.

In this blog, we share the experiences of team members who visited Laos for our unexploded ordnance (UXO) clearance project. Our project page outlines our activities and technical approach; here, through photos and firsthand accounts from the field, we hope to convey a side of Laos that numbers and technical explanations alone cannot.

The Field Was Far Harsher Than We Imagined

When we stepped onto a UXO clearance site in Laos, we found ground covered in grass growing waist-high. Searchers work in teams of three, metal detectors in hand, walking carefully row by row through an area divided into a grid. Stakes along the paths marked where it was safe to walk. The black scorch marks scattered at our feet were traces of small bombs that had been detonated on the spot.

We were told that anyone within 100 meters of a detonation can lose their hearing from the blast.

When the Numbers Began to Carry Real Weight

More than 500 million cluster submunitions were dropped across Laos. Of these, around 80 million are believed to remain in the ground as unexploded ordnance.

Yet the figures we heard on site went even further. In Khammouane Province alone, the province we visited, records show that 91 million bombs were dropped. A single province received a number approaching the total UXO remaining nationwide. This fact quietly but unmistakably speaks to how extraordinary the bombing of Laos was.

Surveys of flatlands and residential areas are slowly progressing, but the mountainous regions remain completely untouched.

In our next post, we will share the history this land has been through and the stories of the people we met there.
